The Imaginary Invalid

by Molière

Applause Community Theatre invites actors of all experience levels to audition for this fast-paced satire that is a joyful ensemble piece that blends physical comedy, sharp wit, and big character work.

In this gender-blind production of Molière’s classic satire, Argan, a hypochondriac, schemes to marry their child to a doctor to get free healthcare. Known for its sharp wit and humor, we believe this play is very timely, even though it was written more than 350 years ago.

Character Breakdown

(All roles gender-blind. Ages listed are stage age ranges.)

Argan (40–70)
The “imaginary invalid.” The comic engine of the play. Dramatic, self-absorbed, obsessive about health, yet oddly lovable.

Toinette (20–50)
Argan’s clever servant. Bold, sharp, quick-thinking, fearless.

Béline (30–60)
Argan’s calculating second spouse. Charming on the surface, opportunistic underneath.

Angélique (18–30)
Argan’s daughter. Romantic, sincere, determined to marry for love rather than convenience.

Cléante (18–35)
Angélique’s love interest. Earnest, creative, willing to scheme for love.

Béralde (30–65)
Argan’s sibling. Voice of reason. Observant, steady, often the smartest person in the room.

Doctor Diafoirus (40–70)
A pompous physician. Formal, self-important, delightfully ridiculous.

Thomas Diafoirus (20–40)
The doctor’s child and Angélique’s unwanted suitor. Awkward, rehearsed, and socially stiff.

Monsieur or Madame Bonnefoi (40–70)
A notary with dry humor and opportunistic undertones.

Ensemble / Additional Roles
May include medical professionals, assistants, or doubling of roles depending on casting. Strong ensemble players encouraged.
