Reviews for Red by John Logan
performed by Applause Community Theatre
Twin Cities Playwright Terry Newby:
RED, written by John Logan, tells the story of legendary painter Mark Rothko. The play follows Rothko and his young assistant as they confront the threatening presence of a new generation of artists. Tormented by his ego and the rise of new insurgent artists, Rothko takes on his greatest challenge yet: to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting.
The cast has only two characters -- Patrick Holt as Rothko, and Brock Ray as his assistant Ken. Patrick and Brock deliver unforgettable performances as they strut and fret their time on stage, each actor jockeying for dominance and respect. Gary Davis offers a light hand as director, allowing the actors and the script to shine. RED is a show that deserves to be seen more than once.

Twin Cities lawyer Thomas Pearson:
“Red” is a polished and powerful production. The actors deftly portray the emotional peaks and valleys of life in the world of art. Director Gary Davis and his team lend creative, yet subtle, touches that make community theater so worthy. Whatever color you see, see “Red”.
Twin Cities Playwright Jim Lundy:
With John Logan's "RED", Applause Community Theatre launches a quasar of a production that pulsates with poignancy and heaves with drama. Direction by Gary Davis is crisp; Pat Holt ("Rothko") and Brock Ray ("Ken") deliver red-hot performances to remember. Never on the Applause Community Theatre stage, or anywhere else, have I seen a more worthwhile production. Be sure to see "RED”!
